Though technically located in both Maricopa and Yavapai counties, Peoria AZ is mostly located in Maricopa County with a tiny portion of the northern side residing in Yavapai County. As a major suburb of Phoenix AZ, the estimated population of the city was around 176,000 as of 2019. Named after Peoria, Illinois, the name is a corruption of the Miami-Illinois word for ‘prairie fire.’ First settled in 1886, the town was granted a post office two years later. The railroad brought businesses and settlers to the town, and the depot remains in a local park.
A town devoted mostly to resort and leisure living, Peoria is focused on establishing itself as an industrial, commercial, and mixed development use area on the new Loop 303 freeway corridor. There are water parks, large numbers of natural trails, and local sports to participate in. National sports are a housed in the Peoria Sports Complex, the spring training home of both the San Diego Padres and Seattle Mariners. More recently, the Peoria Film Fest in September attracts people from all over the southwest to screen movies that might never be seen nationally in theaters.
